At Barrs Court Primary School we believe Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship, and Economic (PSHCE) education helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active, responsible citizens.
PSHCE is central to the pupil’s learning journey at Barrs Court and is taught across the school continuously during lessons, assemblies, school clubs, school events and break times. We have termly values which are focussed on in whole school assemblies (Responsibility, friendship, resilience, teamwork, respect and honesty) and complementing learning gems that teachers refer to during lessons in order for children to know what learning characteristics are desirable (problem solving, partner work, team work, empathy, resilience and focus).
In EYFS, the provision is planned to ensure development in Physical, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED) occurs daily. In provision, children will explore the ideas of relationships, feelings and appropriate behaviours, self-confidence and self-awareness, rules and routines, empathy and restorative justice.
In KS1 and KS2, we also have discreet PSHCE sessions delivered through two main areas. Firstly, weekly PSHCE lessons which follows the PSHE Association’s overarching themes of Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World and covers areas such as Relationships, Healthy lives, Human Rights, British Values, and Global citizenship.
Secondly, we follow Ripple Kindness, a social and emotional literacy programme which complements our PSHCE lessons to promote a healthy Mental Wellbeing. It has kindness at its core but also has units on mindfulness, resilience and this is taught fortnightly.
