Being an Engineer (D&T)

“Good ideas can come at any time so always have a pencil to hand” James Dyson

At Barrs Court, we are extremely proud of our Design and Technology. In the National Curriculum it states, “Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.”

In line with this we want all children at Barrs Court to:

  • Master practical skills and to develop high quality products in food, materials, textiles, electrical, computing, construction and mechanics.
  • Be given the opportunity to design, make, evaluate and improve their projects. We are passionate about giving our children the opportunity to develop all of the key skills in the design process.
  • Be encouraged to develop a firm knowledge of influential designers throughout history and within the locality.

Design Technology starts with construction in Early Years and is built on across the key stages through topic related work. Children are given opportunities to develop and master practical skills in food, materials, textiles, electronics, computer design, construction and mechanics. We ensure that each stage of the planning process is explored so that children have a thorough understanding of how to plan, edit, make and evaluate their technology projects. Through visitors, trips and experiences linked to real life, children get to explore these skills and how they are applied in the wider world.

Key Design and Technology skills are progressively taught and developed throughout our school. Our teachers plan exciting and meaningful lessons which encourage children to explore and refine their key skills in the design making process.

Children are encouraged to think critically and evaluate their work, making connections and deepening their understanding through exploring the work of influential designers.
